Cancún by the Numbers: When to Visit, What to Pay, and Why Timing Matters

By Lewis Canseco | Founder of CancunInsider • 28 Years in Cancún • Ex-SECTUR • Hotel & Transportation Veteran

Introduction: I've Watched Millions of Tourists Arrive at the Wrong Time

For 28 years I've watched the same pattern: tourists arriving at the worst possible moment, overpaying, spending hours in traffic, and missing out on the best Cancún has to offer.

It's not their fault. The information floating around about Cancún's seasons is vague, contradictory, or just plain wrong. Most guides will tell you "the best time is December to April" without explaining what arriving in those months actually means.

I've worked in hotels, coordinated transportation, and spent time at SECTUR looking at internal data. I've seen the occupancy figures, complaint patterns, and passenger flows that tourists never get to see. And what I've learned is that there's no "best time" for everyone—there's the right time for you, based on what you're looking for.

This article is my attempt to put all that information in your hands. With real data, not guesswork.

The Four Seasons of Cancún (They're Not What You Think)

Forget spring, summer, fall, and winter. In Cancún, tourist seasons work differently.

Season  - Months  -  Hotel Occupancy  -   Prices  - Crowds

High (Winter) | December - April | 78% - 90% | $$$$ | Massive
Easter Week | March - April | 85% - 95% | $$$$ | Unbearable
Shoulder Season | May - June, November | 70% - 78% | $$ - $$$ | Moderate
Low (Summer/Fall) | July - October | 65% - 73% | $ - $$ | Low

High Season (December - April): The Price of Perfection

The Real Numbers

High season is when everyone wants to come to Cancún. And for good reason: the weather is spectacular. But it comes at a cost.

  • Hotel occupancy: 78% to 90%, with peaks exceeding 88% in the Hotel Zone. In February 2026, occupancy was 78.9%.
  • Tourist arrivals: In January 2026, 937,000 visitors entered through Cancún Airport alone.
  • Air traffic: On December 26, 2025, the airport processed 693 flights in a single day.
  • Hotel prices: A 4-5 star resort in high season can cost from **$5,500 MXN per night** (approximately $275 USD).

What Nobody Tells You

Traffic is hell. That 20-minute ride from the airport to the Hotel Zone can easily turn into 45-60 minutes. Kukulcán Boulevard becomes a parking lot.

The airport is chaos. Immigration lines can take 1-2 hours. The taxi area is crowded with aggressive vendors.

Everything costs more. Flights, hotels, tours, even beers on the beach. Demand is so high that prices skyrocket.

Bookings sell out. If you don't book your private transport weeks in advance, you might not get it. Shared shuttles fill up and you end up stopping at 8-12 different hotels.

Who Is This Season For?

✅ For                                                                                                  ❌ Not For

Travelers who prioritize perfect weather (23°C to 29°C, little rain) | Budget-conscious travelers
Families with fixed school vacations                                                  | Those who hate crowds
Those seeking the "postcard" Cancún experience                          | Those looking for peace and authenticity

Easter Week and Spring Break: Organized Chaos

The Real Numbers

March and April are a different beast. That's when high season explodes.

  • Spring Break 2025: Officially March 10-23, though many universities have recess from late February to mid-April.
  • Occupancy: Hotels at 90-95% capacity. Some resorts hit 100% on weekends.
  • Visitor profile: Mostly US college students and Mexican families for Easter Week.

What Nobody Tells You

It's a 24-hour party. If you're looking for peace and quiet, this is NOT your time. The Hotel Zone turns into a massive rave.

Prices are the highest of the year. Many hotels require minimum stays of 3-5 nights and rates are 30-50% higher than shoulder season.

Transport is a challenge. Private shuttles book up weeks in advance. Taxis take advantage of demand to charge even more abusive rates.

Who Is This Season For?

✅ For                                                                     ❌ Not For

Students and young people looking to party     | Anyone seeking peace and quiet
Mexican families during Easter Week                 | Budget-conscious travelers
Those who don't mind overpaying for the vibe | Honeymooning couples

Shoulder Season (May - June, November): The Sweet Spot

The Real Numbers

This is my favorite season after 28 years here. And the data backs it up.

  • Hotel occupancy: 70% to 78%. Enough to have a vibe, but not so much that you feel crushed.
  • Prices: Noticeably lower than high season. Many hotels offer "second night free" or "breakfast included" promotions.
  • Weather: Still excellent, especially in November. May and June start to warm up, but they're manageable.

What Nobody Tells You

May is the most underrated month. The weather is almost perfect, prices drop, and crowds disappear. It's Cancún's best-kept secret.

November is magical. Before the December avalanche hits, November offers pleasant temperatures, warm water, and a fraction of the tourists.

Flights are cheaper. Airlines drop prices in these "transition" months. You can find flights up to 40% cheaper than high season.

Transport flows. Without the high season chaos, airport transfers are fast and stress-free. Your private shuttle picks you up and in 20-30 minutes you're at your hotel.

Who Is This Season For?

✅ For

Everyone, honestly
Those seeking the best value for money
Travelers who want to avoid crowds without sacrificing weather

Low Season (July - October): Hurricane Season... and Deal Season

The Real Numbers

This is Cancún's most misunderstood season. Yes, there's hurricane risk. But it's also when prices are the lowest of the year.

  • Hotel occupancy: 65% to 73%. In summer 2025, Cancún closed at just 73% occupancy. Well below projections.
  • Prices: The lowest of the year. You can find luxury resorts for $3,000-$4,000 MXN per night.
  • Weather: Hot and humid. Temperatures from 26°C to 32°C. Frequent but generally short rain showers.

What Nobody Tells You

Hurricane season doesn't mean it's always raining. Most days in "hurricane season" are perfectly sunny. You might get an afternoon storm that lasts an hour, then the sun comes back out.

September is the cheapest month. And also the highest hurricane risk month. It's the gamble: either you score an incredible deal or you get a hurricane.

Beaches are emptier. If you like having space on the sand, this is your time.

The heat is real. It's not for everyone. The humidity can be overwhelming. But if you don't mind sweating a little, the rewards are huge.

The Real Hurricane Risk

According to historical data, the probability of a hurricane directly hitting Cancún in any given season is low. Most tropical systems pass by or only bring heavy rain.

But when it hits, it hits hard. Like we saw with Wilma in 2005. If you're traveling in September-October, it's worth buying travel insurance with hurricane coverage.

Who Is This Season For?

✅ For                                                                          ❌ Not For

Budget-conscious travelers                                        | Those who hate heat
Those who don't mind heat and humidity                  | Families with young children (heat can be too much)
Those seeking empty beaches and bargain prices   | Those who can't tolerate weather uncertainty
Adventurers who accept the risk |

Special Events and Key Dates

Day of the Dead (November 1-2)

A beautiful and authentic celebration. In Cancún it's not as big as in central Mexico, but there are special events. It's an excellent time to visit if you want to experience genuine Mexican culture.

Christmas and New Year

The highest prices of the year. Period. If you're traveling on these dates, prepare your wallet. Hotel occupancy hits 90% and flight and hotel prices skyrocket. Book way, way in advance.

Independence Day (September 16)

Authentic Mexican fiesta. "El Grito" is celebrated in the main square. It's a unique cultural experience, though prices rise slightly.

An Insider's Perspective: What 28 Years Have Taught Me

The Secret Hotels Don't Want You to Know

Hotels make more money in high season, but service is better in low season. Why? Because when there are fewer guests, staff have more time to take care of you. In high season, employees are stressed, tired, and overworked.

I've seen front desk agents check in 50 families in an hour during high season. In low season, that same agent can take the time to recommend a local restaurant, give you a room upgrade, or just smile genuinely.

My Personal Recommendation

After 28 years, if I had to recommend just one month to visit Cancún, it would be November.

The weather is perfect. Crowds are manageable. Prices are reasonable. The sea is warm. And best of all: no stress. You arrive at the airport, get through immigration in 30 minutes, your private shuttle picks you up without delays, and in 20 minutes you're at your hotel.

My second choice: May. Just as good, just a little warmer.

What SECTUR Taught Me About Seasons

At SECTUR, I saw complaint data by season. Guess when there are the most complaints?

High season.

Not because service is worse, but because expectations are higher. People pay more and expect more. When something goes wrong—and in high season, with so many people, something always goes wrong—the frustration is greater.

In low season, people are more relaxed, more flexible, happier. And that shows up in satisfaction surveys.

The Impact on Your Transportation: What Changes by Season

High Season (December - April)

  • Book your shuttle 2-3 weeks in advance
  • Expect heavy traffic (airport trip can double in duration)
  • Airport will be chaotic (long lines, lots of people)
  • Transport prices are fixed, but demand is high

Shoulder Season (May - June, November)

  • Book 1 week in advance (or even less)
  • Normal traffic (transfer times are as advertised)
  • Manageable airport (immigration in 30-45 minutes)
  • Better overall experience

Low Season (July - October)

  • You can book even the same day
  • Minimal traffic (you arrive in record time)
  • Quiet airport (immigration in 15-20 minutes)
  • Transport deals and promotions

Conclusion: There's No "Best Time," There's the "Right Time for You"

After 28 years watching tourists arrive in Cancún, I've reached a conclusion: there's no universally best season. There's the season that fits what you're looking for.

If you're looking for...                                        Go in...

Perfect weather and you don't mind paying | December - April
Party and youthful vibe                                   | March (Spring Break)
Best value for money                                      | May or November
Low prices and empty beaches                     | July - October
Authentic cultural experience                        | November (Day of the Dead)
Avoiding crowds at all costs                          | September - October

My final advice: don't get carried away by what travel guides say. Think about what you really want from your trip. Then choose the season that best aligns with that.

And no matter what happens, book your transportation in advance. I've seen too many vacations ruined by a bad decision at the airport.

Your vacation deserves a good start. The numbers confirm it.
